could work this week on the chuck hagel nomination. the question remains whether or not republicans will block the nomination with a filibuster. the president traveling to push for slacker gun laws. with the nation focusing on the super bowl, we want to turn to washington's role on regulating the nfl. we will use super bowl sunday to talk about government regulations when it comes to the issue of steroids or head injuries. the phone lines are open. let's begin with a look at some of the headlines courtesy of the museum. from "the san francisco chronicle" -- from "the baltimore sun" -- let's turn to the politics and policy behind the nfl. this is a story a few days ago from "the washington post." outlining a plan and a letter to the executive director of the players union. they agreed as part of a 2011 collective bargaining agreement that the players should be tested for hgh, but the two sides of that agreed. two seasons have been played without it. last weekend in new orleans, roger goodell was asked a number of questions including one on the issue of head injuries. here is more fro

hearing, it looks like chuck hagel will soon be confirmed to become the next secretary of defense. cnn has learned at least five republican senators would oppose a possible filibuster of hagel's nomination and with no democratic depeck tors, it looks like clear sailing for the embattled nominee. >>> the pentagon expected to announce it is expanding benefits to same sex partners and military personnel. officials say leon panetta hasn't made a final decision on which benefits will be included, but that could happen this week. it comes almost a year and a half after the military repealed "don't ask, don't tell" which banned openly gay service. >>> four years after he first took office, president obama plans to make his first trip to israel. the white house isn't saying exactly when he's going to go, but the president did discuss a spring visit with netanyahu. the president's trip will also include visits to the west bank and jordan. he visited israel as a presidential candidate in 2008, but has not been back as president. >> at lot of presidents have not traveled to israel, but he is going. >

today debating the nomination of former senator chuck hagel to be defense secretary. a short time ago they voted 71-27 to move forward on the nomination. 60 votes are needed the --. confirmation vote is set at 4:30 eastern today. you can see that on c-span2. also the senate finance committee voted 19-5 approving the nomination of jack lew to be the next treasury secretary. that nomination now goes to the full senate for consideration. can you see that committee hearing and vote in the c-span video library. here's a portion of testimony this morning with senator chuck grassley of iowa who voted against the nomination. >> finally, mr. lew, first i'm concerned about the attitude that this administration and supporters who criticize the senate usually anonymously for exercising basic due diligence regarding this nominee, they don't like anyone questioning them and they don't like answering questions. despite their tactics, we must continue to perform the advice and consent. what we have seen so far is that mr. lew is very good at getting paid by taxpayers, received a taxpayer funded bailo
